Top Wedding Trends 2018-19

As your go-to for everything wedding in Thunder Bay, Plan Your Day Thunder Bay has the scoop on 2018-2019 wedding trends. From florals to fashion, we’re giving you the latest buzz from some of the best local vendors around.

Trend #1: All you need is lush

Vibrant brights are all the rage when it comes to florals and décor going into next spring. Think bold, brilliant, and beautiful. Brides, florists, and decorators are working with their own palettes and thinking outside the box with risky colours and extravagant arrangements such as floral trees and large hanging statement pieces.

Larissa Satten of Glamour & Glow Events, who regularly attends the Wedding Merchants Business Academy (MBA) convention in Las Vegas, is on the pulse when it comes to the latest and biggest trends in wedding world.

Trend #2: Mix & Match Textures

Home décor trends typically carry through to weddings and that means that this upcoming wedding season, you can expect rich texture combinations of velvet, satin, lace, and chiffon dressing up chairs, place settings, and receiving line and dessert tables. Similar to styling an outfit, the rule with textures is to use them sparingly and strategically so that there’s just enough without being overpowering.

The mix & match trend is also seen in the fashion industry, where bridal designers are creating dimensional looks by laying different sheer and lace fabrics. That’s all about to change, however, because…

Trend #3 is a Royal Surprise

Next year’s wedding dress trends are anyone’s guess at this point, as styles will be determined by the most anticipated nuptials of the year: the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry happening May 19th.

“When Princess Diana got married, long trains became a big thing, and when Kate Middleton chose to do classic vintage, the industry followed,” tells Shelby Ch’ng, owner of Unveiled Bridal Boutique.

“As a buyer, I’m already starting to anticipate the kind of dress Meghan Markle will wear, and look for dresses that reflect her clean, slim-line style.”

Trend #4: Fun with Format

Relax! Or, keep it formal. You can structure your wedding day however you want!

Kelly Stover and Maelyn Hurley are Events Managers for the Chanterelle on Park, and making wonderful events come to life is their nine-to-five.

“Not as many couples are sticking to the traditional format of the afternoon ceremony followed by the reception in the evening with five hours in between,” Kelly says. “Rather, there’s a lot more people opting for the casual cocktail party kind of wedding, and ceremonies often happen right in the venue.”

A canapé wedding (translation: ‘little bites’), involves passed appetizers with no sit down meal. Many couples add food stations like a charcuterie board or oyster bar. Either way, canapé weddings allow guests to mix and mingle, adding an enhanced social element while feeding them copious amounts of food.

Sit-down options like the family style, where guests pass the servings around the table to each other, also allow for a relaxed and interactive guest experience.

Trend #5: Personalize

“Couples tend to lose themselves when choosing the look and feel of their weddings,” warns Larissa of Glamour & Glow Events. “Trends are great – nobody wants an outdated wedding – but personalizing the affair is what makes it special.”

There are lots of ways to make your wedding day truly your own, and Larissa encourages couples to spend a little less time looking at Pinterest and more time looking at themselves. Unique party favours, signature cocktails and food items, as well as amenities (games, entertainment such as a caricaturist, or a cigar/donut/(insert your favourite thing here) bar), let your personalities show through and are the best ways to creating a memorable time for everyone. You can also incorporate personal elements into the wedding décor and stationary.
